Dear Readers,
Within the pages of this anthology, you’ll discover the essence of a literary journey that spanned for three years from October 2019 to October 2022. Fiction Kitchen Berlin, an English-language literary magazine with Berlin as its backdrop, welcomed writers and readers from around the world to experience the magic of flash fiction.
I guess the idea for the Kitchen started while hosting Meetup sessions for writers during that summer of 2019. Besides drinking beer and chatting in the hot Berlin sunshine, we supported each other by reading stories out loud. This was a great way to get feedback and fix any potential issues before submission. Due to time constraints and the size of the crowd, short stories worked great in this context and after a while I found these sessions were becoming fixated on flash fiction. This triggered the idea for a Berlin based journal dedicated to this storytelling genre, and well, long story short (no pun intended!), Fiction Kitchen Berlin was born later that year.
During my time as the editor of the magazine, I had the sincere privilege to work with some of the world’s best authors in flash fiction today. And as with everything else I suppose that’s driven with passion and positive energy, a core group of supporters began to appear, and with that new friendships were developed. Although it’s not easy to develop and maintain a literary journal, these relationships and the feedback I was receiving, were crucial in driving it all forward.
As you journey through these pages, I ask that you take your time to savor each story, to let your imagination roam freely, and to find joy in the unexpected. Just as Berlin became a home for me and my family, I hope that these stories find a home in your hearts, sparking moments of contemplation and wonder.
Thank you for taking a chance with this book. A massive thank you too to all the authors who kindly agreed to have their stories featured within this collection.
Happy reading!
Shane.
